Clinicals Week 4

This past week I spent 6 hours with my preceptor. We did many things, but one meeting stood out as very interesting to me. We went to a nursing executive professional organization meeting. They had a speaker that was a high level nurse exec for one of the local hospitals. She gave a presentation about unions in nursing. This was a very interesting topic to me because growing up in Texas, I don't feel like I know a lot about unions. She explained how many people think that Texas is very vulnerable to union movements right now. She also explained a lot of the tactics that unions and hospitals use when a union tries to come into the organization. I found it all interesting, but I think that her presentation seemed pretty right wing biased. I am more liberal in my views, so I would love to get some other people's views on unions in nursing. From her point of view, it did not sound like a good thing at all. But, I don't like to just believe anything I hear. I need more info before deciding what I think.

  1. I have heard a lot about this Union program, but I think I need more information about the Union. I think it is about time I do my research and ask other people their perception about the Union, Please share with me any information you get

  2. I also heard a lot about Unions from my east coast friends. I don't hear nurses discussing here in the south. My friends in Pennsylvania were telling me they feel more secure being in a nursing Union because their jobs are protected and they are able to demand a certain pay

  3. I have too heard many different views concerning Unions. Some of the comments are positive and some are negative. I am still on the fence. I would really have to research the pros and cons of joining a Union before I would make my decision. I know that they have done good things in the past. But, there is also the negative history that continues to cloud my judgement.

  4. That is very true Angie. I heard a lot of negatives about unions at this meeting. They made them sound really bad. But the presentation was done by a senior leader for a large hospital system, so unions are a bad thing for her. I think it is difficult to sift through the info and determine if I think they are good or bad. Probably a little of both.
